Fags make noise about 377A

Posted in 377A, Singapore, gay by Vinod on the October 25, 2007

Ok seriously… This whole 377A thing is getting out of hand… I mite be subjecting myself to alot of scutiny by writing this post.. but wat the hell.. i like controversy. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/307665/1/.html

I have nothing against gays.. u do ur thing.. n i’ll do mine.. as long as ur not a menace to society, ur personal sexual preferences have nothing to do with me.. 377A is a law that criminalized man on man action.. but seriously.. its not as if ur going to fuck outside a police post rite? Its just like the whole blowjob thing, the law is just there.. but its not as if people are not doing it… its not as if the govt is actively “cracking” down on violaters (pun intended).  If they dont want to take it out then just let it be… It will be taken down when the time is right… when society at large is ready.

I’m not for 377A but neither am i against it… i dont really think it matters if they’re not prosecuting people…  Its just like the school rules say ur hair cannot touch ur eyebrows… but if no one makes noise about it.. then its just there as a school rule but not enforced.. it doesnt make a diff to the people violating it rite?

quaff simi?

Posted in Singapore, ajax, popout, quaffs, social networking, tdm by Vinod on the October 7, 2007

I went for TDM’™s popout a few days ago… They had it at one of the ballrooms in Suntec. Very nice place though the conference style event was especially boring because mojority of the presenters kinda sucked. they were not dynamic at all. Of the bunch one guy stood out. Claiming to be one of the first to use AJAX in Singapore.. Cmon… seriously? Which world have u been living in Eric? You spent 5 minutes talking about in place editing as if it were your own feature… on top of that, you say that people copy you? LOL! ok lah, you may have gotten a bunch of ignorant people fooled. but for those in the know… everyone was laughing as you presented that. i’ll admit your UI design is nice… but quaffs still has a long way to go if you want to even play in the social networking game..  For those who dont know about Quaffs, its a multi-level-marketing-social-networking site that sells AJAX. A year from now you’ll probably see Eric at some presentation trying to sell you AJAX and telling you that its good for you.. and will restore your website to better health once you join quaffs, your job will be to sell AJAX to other un-enlightened souls.. at the end of the day, everyone will be ajaxified and the world will be happy :)

What I’ve been up 2…

Posted in Entrepreneurship, Singapore, property, real estate, web 2.0 by Vinod on the August 27, 2007

My blog has been rather dead… I hardly have the time to update it. I guess I’d give an insight to what I’ve been up 2 since I’ve returned from europe for my little remaining readers…

I’ve got one final semester in NUS…. so I’ve got my thesis and a few other final modules to clear …. Thesis is such a bitch… Everything keeps changing all the time… What i’m working on now was not what i started with 6 months ago… ah well, I just wanna get it over and done with… (hopefully with a good grade)

I’m also working at the Garag3, an IDM startup incubator powered by NUS Enterprise and E27. I love it here.. reminds me of the valley, having clusters of startups together really help spur people forward… The environment here is so much more than just officespace….

Finally, the thing thats perhaps taking up the most of my time these days is my very own little startup. I’m very fortunate to have a kick ass team of very talented and energetic people to keep me going…

For home seekers, homespace.sg is a revolutionary Real Estate platform where people can visually shop for homes for sale as compared to going thru lists of ambiguous classified ads and not have a clue where the home is or what’s in the vicinity. With homespace.sg you can easily see nearby transportation, shopping malls and schools and actually know how far away they are to the home you’re interested in. Putting things on the map also mean, you get to compare homes for sale in the same vicinty to make sure you’re getting the best deal!

You’re no longer dependent on one agent to give you all your info… homespace.sg allows you to see all that with the click of a mouse, allowing you to make the best possible decision before you actually go and visit the house.

For Real Estate agents, homespace.sg provides Customer Relationship Management tools, an advertising platform, and even their own professional site complete with property portfolio (which typically costs $300-800) all for free, during this promotional period. Check it out and let all your real estate agent friends know as well! :)

Eurotrip Chronicles: Amsterdam, Holland

Posted in Uncategorized by Vinod on the June 24, 2007

Its 3am in the morning and my second night here in amsterdam… Saw plenty of “interesting” sites to say the least. The red light district for instance, the fact that the police dont really give a crap that everyone is smoking weed.

Went to the Amsterdam ArenA today in the frickin rain, only to find out that it was closed for some free fight. So we’re gonna try our luck again tmr. Other than that, this entire ciy is full of canals, practically everywhere is accessible by boat.. and the public transport here’s pretty efficient, and to top it off, you dont really need to use it most of the time coz all the major attractions are all walking distance… nothing’s really that far… Beautiful architecture… but after awhile they all start to look the same… I’m off to brussels, belgium tmr. Lots of beer drinking to do :) Til then…

Eurotrip Chronicles – Stockholm, Sweden

Posted in Uncategorized by Vinod on the June 19, 2007

I arrived at Stockholm yesterday morning after a long ass flight. Met my cousin, Sanjay, at the airport and we headed over to Kista, where he lived.

I must say… the women of sweden are damn fine! The number of hotties I saw on the first day was uncomparable… not even to california.. I was always under the impression that swedish girls wernt really hot… I guess coz most of the swedish girls I know arnt very hot..

Everything in this damn country is expensive, especially food… I’m not even talking about eating out… even getting stuff from the supermarkets is ridiculous. Like a packet of maggi mee cost one sing dollar. Thats for just one packet! If I had known it was gonna be this ex I would have brought alot more food… ah well. too late for that now.

The weather now’s quite alrite.. not the best I must say, been abit gloomy these past few days. Day temperature is about 15, which is quite comfortable.

Kista is the so called silicon valley of stockholm. Most of the big companies set up shop here at the tech park. But its quite a dead town… things are very quiet now that school is out.

I went on a cruise to Finland yesterday evening.. was quite nice… got to see the little swedish homes in the middle of nowhere… seriously.. what do these ppl do all day? I mean its nice to have a little vacation home n all.. but I would really not be able to survive in a place with such a slow pace of life. I’ll be uploading some pics on Facebook soon, so check it out! Til next time…

Tim Draper not only funds, he sings too!

Posted in Entrepreneurship, Silicon Valley, Singapore by Vinod on the April 20, 2007

A couple of us from the E27 team along with TDM and some entrepreneurs had the privileged to meet Tim Draper over his 3 day stay in Singapore. It was phenomenal! Because the table was so big, we decided to do it speed-dating style.

So after 2 mins or so everyone moved one seat down, which allowed everyone to talk to everyone else in the room. Tim is just an awesome down to earth dude. He’s a charismatic Big Friendly Giant.

After the “speed dating” was over, he rose in song, singing his self composed Riskmaster song, dedicated to all entrepeneurs…. (Considering the bling he made.. its the least he could do. heh) I managed to record it down and here it is..

In any case… during the question and answer session, I asked Tim a very sweeping question… IS THERE HOPE?

His answer was very encouraging. He said the passion and enthusiam he saw in the room reminded him of the valley when he first got into the business.

The social aspect is already there, we have the infrastructure, tremendous government support and heck, its a pretty nice place to live. We need more visionaries like him.

Its really heartwarming to see US VCs of Tim’s status look at it so positively, when the VC scene here isnt as encouraging. He has no qualms about investing in Sg based startups, in fact, he wants to be the first in the know about them!

I trust you will enjoy his song, and I think it perfectly sums it up. Cheers!

3 reasons why Network Marketing is doomed to fail

Posted in MLM, marketing, network marketing by Vinod on the March 15, 2007

Network marketing/Multi-level Marketing (MLM) is a crappy concept. While I have always thought so, I could never quite put a finger on what that was… Having tried it for a short while a long time ago, I speak with (limited) experience.

My take is that MLM was created with the intention to induce a viral effect… very much like buzz marketing. But it went about it in all the wrong ways…

Mistake #1. Creating a need around a product – some MLM product’s arnt too bad at all.. Like aroma therapy for constipation, some funky tasting tea to clear your colon.. bla bla bla.. seriously, how many of us need this crap? much less need this crap monthly.

Mistake #2. Playing with emotions – notice when MLM people try to convince you, they start messin with your emotions… they say shit like “do you really wanna live like this for the rest of your life?”, “Don’t you wanna own your own business?”, ”Can you afford to support your kids and parents when you get older?”. The funny thing is that most of these people never made it themselves… they always refer you to their “upline” for proof of success… They hardly ever sell the company.. and when they do, they compare it with other crappy ass MLM companies..  “we sell aromatherapy, they only sell soap” WTF?

Mistake #3. Messing around with trust – The fundemental social flaw with MLM is that it messes with the trust you’ve gained for yourself over the years…. The reason why you trust someone who gives you a movie reccomendation is coz he has nothing to gain from it… So there’s no underlying incentive for someone to reccomend something to you other than goodwill. But MLM screws around with this, and when people know there’s an underlying incentive, they WILL steer clear of you…

On that note… I will end this little story…

I know I’ve been rather inactive lately… Thats coz I’ve been really busy with school and E27… there’s just too much going on right now… And while some might argue that I should blog all the more because of that, I beg to differ… Here’s something I’ve been working on… Its been getting pretty viral and I seem to have quite a few fans already.. hehe.. :) Anyway, here it is… its not meant to be a racist, its just looking at things from a different perspective… hell.. most of my friends are chinese anyway and they loved it :) enjoy!

E27 4our: You are the Media!

Posted in Entrepreneurship, Silicon Valley, Singapore, Unconference, e27, new media, web 2.0 by Vinod on the February 11, 2007

e27 logoWe’re back…. and this time its going to be bigger and better than the last one. We’ve gained tremendous feedback and support throughout the entire year of running E27 Singapore. The next event will be help this thursday 15th of Feb at SMU School of Economics and Social Sciences on the 4th floor. There will be plenty of food and drinks available so come down. More details are available on our brand spanking new website www.entrepreneur27.org/sg.

We’re just a bunch of guys who are passionate about entrepreneurship. Most of us have returned from Silicon Valley on a one year internship, and studying part time at Stanford. Since then, we’ve experienced a paradigm shift and would like to speard the Silicon Valley spirit in Singapore… Its not always about the dough…. I feel that sometimes Singaporeans only do things for the money… True, you cant ignore the fact that you need money, but I just dont feel that that should be the main driving force of an entrepreneur… If people share their knowledge if serves to benefit society as a whole… and only then will Sg thrive as an entreprenuerial hub….
